Why is proper helmet fitment important?
- Helps improve helmet safety
- Maximizes comfort
- Reduces noise levels and distractions
- Helps keep the helmet on the riderβs head during an accident
- Helps maximize the safety benefits of the helmet
- ***Safety standards (like DOT or SNELL) are valid only for properly fitting helmets
Finding the right size to start with:
- Pass a soft, flexible tape measure horizontally around the head, approximately 1-inch above the eyebrows
- Move the tape measure up and down slightly to find the largest measurement
- Cross reference with the appropriate size chart and select the helmet size that is closest to the measurement
- If the head measurement falls between 2 sizes, then try on the smaller of the 2 helmets first (use the size chart as a starting point)
When the helmet is on, complete these steps:
- Check that the helmet inner lining fits snugly all around the riderβs head
- Check that the top pad presses on the top of the riderβs head
- Check that the cheek pads press against the riderβs cheeks. When opening and closing the mouth, the riderβs teeth should drag along the inside of the cheeks.
Confirm these aspects of fitment:
- Make sure you CANNOT easily slide two fingers into the helmet along the side of the riderβs temple
- With the chinstrap properly fastened, grab the helmet with one hand on each side. Without moving the head, try to move the helmet up/down and side-to-side.
- The rider should feel the skin of the head and face being pulled as the helmet is moved, and it should not be easy to move.
- If the helmet can be moved around easily and does not βgrabβ the riderβs cheeks, it is TOO BIG!
Signs a helmet is TOO BIG:
- Helmet may βfallβ onto the head with little resistance
- Noticeably loose around the crown of the head
- Eyes are located near the top of the helmetβs viewpoint
- Helmet can move independently of the riderβs head, no pulling on the skin when helmet is moved up/down and side-to-side
Signs a helmet is TOO SMALL:
- Helmet will be extremely difficult to put on
- Likely to cause immediate pressure points
- Eyes are likely located lower within the helmetβs viewpoint
Signs a helmet fits PROPERLY:
- Helmet may take some effort to slide over head
- Helmet should fit snugly around the crown of the head, without overwhelming pressure
- Eyes are located in the center of the helmetβs viewpoint
Rotation Tests that must be performed:
STEP 1
- Securely fasten the chin strap
- Place your hands on the back of the helmet
- Try to push the helmet off by rotating it forward
STEP 2
- Place your hands on the front of the helmet
- Try pushing it off by rotating it rear-ward
RESULTS: With the correct size helmet, there should be LITTLE MOVEMENT, and the helmet should stay SECURELY IN PLACE.

AERODYNAMICS
Developed and refined in SHOEIβs state-of-the-art, in-house wind tunnel facility from the very beginning stages of life, the RF-1400 boasts impressive improvements in aerodynamic performance, including a 6% reduction in lift and a 4% reduction in drag (as compared to the RF-1200). Optimal shell aerodynamics not only improves the helmetβs ability to cut through air, it also contributes to a welcomed reduction in wind noise without blocking the roadβs valuable informative sounds.
ADVANCED NOISE REDUCTION
Β
- Optimal shell aerodynamics reduce wind noise around the helmet
- Vortex Generators on the sides of the shield reduce wind turbulence
- All-new, airtight window beading provides wind/waterproof seal
- New, voluminous cheek pads and removable ear pads further restrain wind noise inside the helmet
- The RF-1400 provides an incredibly quiet riding experience without blocking the roadβs informative sounds
VENTILATION PERFORMANCE
Utilizing SHOEIβs in-house wind tunnel to help reveal the optimal balance between airflow and silence, SHOEI designers relocated the center/forehead vent, and also equipped it with an additional air intake hole, to help increase the volume of cooling air entering the helmet. Additionally, a new, enlarged exhaust outlet vent helps take better advantage of negative pressure suction at the rear of the helmet, yielding improved hot-air expulsion.
SHIELD SYSTEM
The all-new CWR-F2 shield system features improved visibility, functionality, and performance over its predecessor. The 2D βflatβ outside surface combined with 3D technology inside offers an aggressive look with optimized visibility for a more natural view, Vortex Generators on the sides of the shield improve aerodynamics and reduce wind noise, and an all-new center locking mechanism helps to evenly distribute shield forces across both spring-loaded base plates.
SAFETY
Helmet functionality and performance are paramount to the overall riding and racing experience, but safety provides the critical foundation that a premium helmet is built upon. The RF-1400 features the SHOEI-exclusive Multi-Ply Matrix AIM+ shell, proprietary Dual-Layer/Multi-Density EPS liner, and the Emergency Quick Release System (E.Q.R.S.).
COMFORT
The RF-1400 is equipped with a fully removable, washable, adjustable, and replaceable 3D Max-Dry Interior System II that is capable of dissipating sweat 2x faster than traditional nylon interiors. Newly designed cheek pads feature more volume on the bottom for greater comfort and reduced wind noise, and the soft yet durable lower cheek pad fabric provides an extremely plush fit and feel.
